The Belize Barrier Reef draws divers and snorkelers from around the world. Gentle whale sharks seem to welcome visitors to their home. Swirling colonies of lettuce coral and stands of staghorn coral create an underwater fantasyland teeming with flamboyant fish. Quiet sunset beaches, lush forests and dutiful indigenous farmers complete the idyllic scene captured by The Road Less Traveled.
Belize is a Central American haven for discovery. More than 36% of the country’s landmass falls under protection and it has the lowest population density in Central America. Descendants of Mayan and Spanish settlers combine their cultures in food – sometimes fiery, sometimes cool, always flavorful – and fun – with drums, dance and soccer.
We experience these facets of a fascinating land. We learn and develop diving skills so we can help researchers work to preserve the natural riches. We toil on cacao farms and are rewarded with new friendships, new understanding, and the freshest cups of sweet and spicy chocolate in the world. So many flavors of travel to savor.

YES! Our Belize program is open to all completing 9-12th graders and does not require any previous diving experience. Students diving with us for the first time will earn their PADI Open Water Certification, providing them with the skills, confidence, and certification to dive anywhere in the world. Experienced divers can build upon previous certifications to earn PADI Advanced Diver Certifications or further their advanced certification with specialized skills such as fish i.d. and underwater photography.
Accidentally introduced to the Western Atlantic and Caribbean waters in the 1980s, the invasive and venomous lionfish poses a major threat to Belize's native fish. With no predators and an insatiable appetite for local fish, Lionfish wreak havoc on the local ecosystem. To address this issue, many local divers and fisherman have joined forces to capture, eat, and make jewelry out of these pesky Pacific invasives. Our service work in Belize focuses on eradicating lionfish populations and researching native lobster and conch populations to map the impact of invasives on the local ecosystem.
Explore ancient Mayan ruins, discover the art of Mayan chocolate-making, float down a lush jungle river, and keep the beat on a Garifuna drum. During our time in Punta Gorda, we stay in a private home and visit a sustainable cacao farm with our expert local guide Juan. We learn how to gather cacao beans from the Theobroma tree and prepare authentic Mayan chocolate. Later, we hike past stunning jungle pyramids and zip line through the verdant canopy. Our journey culminates with a traditional Garfuna drum circle alongside some of Punta Gorda's most talented Garifuna drummers.
Thank you so much for all of the effort that went into developing such a wonderful experience. It was educational, cultural, and environmentally friendly and safe," Andrea P., Gud Mawin Alumni Parent
Camille had for sure one of the best and most adventurous experiences of her life, she has grown more mature and thoughtful. We are so proud of her having done this, as well as the advanced scuba licence she obtained. She made so many dear friends, hopefully with a few will she will stay in touch and perhaps come again on another trip with you! I really wanted to say that you did a great job teaching and safe guarding these children," Elise N., Gud Mawin Alumni Parent
Becca had an absolutely incredible experience with her Belize group and the impact of her trip is becoming more apparent with each passing week. She was recently complimented by a family friend on how mature and composed she seems to have grown this year. She responded (to my surprise, quite frankly) that she credited her RLT trip for that, and explained that the self-reflection exercises the leaders led them through were transformative for her -- and that the entire trip had been a wonderful learning and maturing experience," Betsy, Gud Mawin Alumni Parent
