The only living coral barrier reef in the continental U.S. The curious manatees that, despite their girth, swim with grace. Refuges for rare and endangered species of birds, bugs and sea turtles that need special care to survive. The Everglades. ... Florida may be the Sunshine State, but at The Road Less Traveled, we’d rather get wet.
South Florida and the Florida Keys are water wonderlands for snorkeling, sea kayaking, swimming and best of all: diving. We work on open water SCUBA diver certification and the next levels of specialties. Destinations include an underwater archeological preserve and international biosphere reserve.
We don’t just revel in nature. We also take an active role in preserving it. We spend quality time working to restore corals in underwater nurseries, assisting with turtle and bird preservation and rehab efforts, and understanding the challenges faced by marine researchers.

8 years! We started diving in the Keys back in 2009 and fell in love with the turquoise waters, friendly faces, and key lime pie. Since that time, we have worked on countless coral restoration projects with our friends at the Coral Restoration Foundation, and this strong partnership has laid the grounds for us to develop other diving programs across the globe with CRF founder and CNN hero Ken Nedimyer.
We stay with our good friend Martha, in a beautiful private home in Key Largo. Martha's home provides the perfect launch location for our dives and her local expertise allows us to take advantage of local festivals and happenings. This will be our ninth year staying with her. Boys and girls are separated into different bedrooms and we employ a rotation system (if needed) between the beds.
Yes! Our Florida Keys program is open to completing 9-12th graders and does not require any previous diving experience. Students diving with us for the first time will earn their PADI Open Water Certification, providing them with the skills, confidence, and certification to dive anywhere in the world. Experienced divers can build upon previous certifications to earn PADI Advanced Diver Certifications or further their advanced certification with specialized skills such as fish i.d., and underwater photography. PADI is the world's leading scuba diving organization.
The Coral Restoration Foundation implements innovative, simple, and cost-effective solutions to keep our precious coral reefs alive. Utilizing offshore nurseries to grow endangered elkhorn and staghorn corals, CRF restores previously dominant reefs. While at the CRF, we assist in the propagation of corals, monitor previously outplanted colonies, and enhance educational opportunities for communities around the globe.
Founder and friend, Ken Nedimyer focuses his attention on developing strong relationships with local communities and developing educational opportunities for divers and citizens across the globe. Read more about his work here.
Our 15 year old daughter went on the eco/scuba trip this past summer, and she had an extraordinarily good time. Somehow the instructors were able to maintain the right balance of structure and freedom that worked like a charm for her. The activities were interesting and challenging. The kids really came together in a touching way (apparent from how much they still talk on Facebook). RLT communications are clear, direct, and during the trip a lot of fun to get - they use social in a smart way so that parents can get a feel for what's going on without being intrusive. Our daughter now has her sights set on Africa for next summer," Jeffery D., Keys Alumni Parent
I picked up Trevor from airport yesterday afternoon and he just talked & talked about all the great things that he did & learned. Diving, kayaking, hiking, dolphins, sharks, etc. But by far the most meaningful things for Bruce & I to hear were the intangibles -- the last day's sharing game, Jared & Emily and the positive role modeling, the friendships and the appreciation for this opportunity! This has truly been a life impacting experience for our son," Susan E., Keys Alumni Parent
Patrick had a truly fabulous time on his trip to Florida Keys and he describes it as the best experience of his life. He enjoyed everything and everybody. As parents we were obviously concerned about sending him all the way from the UK at such a young age but everything seemed to go smoothly. He says that the trip gave him the opportunity to be wholly himself and not someone's son, classmate, etc - and he relished the experience," Liz Y., Keys Alumni Parent
